Tyre Safety Info
Your tyres are vital for your road safety. They are often
taken for granted as they are out of sight for much of the
time. Yet tyres are the sole point of contact between your
car and the road surface. To be on the safe side, you
should check your tyres regularly, ideally once a week. We
have put together some advice to help you look after your
tyres.
Tyre Pressures
A tyre doesn't have to look flat to be under-inflated, so
check its pressure weekly. Ideally, use a digital pressure
gauge. You'll find the info in your car handbook - if in
doubt, ask us for help. Remember that if you carry heavy
loads or drive regularly on motorways, (e.g. when going on
holiday) you should increase the tyre pressures in line
with the manufacturer's recommendations. Tyre pressures
should only be checked when the tyres are cold. Driving
with incorrectly inflated tyres will affect the way your
car rides, steers, handles and brakes.
Over-Inflation
The tyre becomes hard and the contact area is reduced. Grip
and performance is impaired especially in bad weather
conditions and the steering becomes less assertive. Other
symptoms include premature wear to the tyre in the centre.
Under-Inflation
This is the most dangerous than over-inflation. The tyre
becomes floppier and offers poor control. In the short
term, the tyre will suffer premature wear on the shoulders
and cornering sharply can even cause the tyre to become
detached from the wheel rim.
If used at higher speeds, the build-up of heat due to
internal friction in the tyre structure could cause the
casing to rupture. The consequences of such a blow-out can
be severe.
We cannot emphasise enough the need to check your tyre
pressures regularly
Tread depth
The Law: Current UK tread depth legislation requires that
car tyres must have a minimum of 1.6 mm of tread in a
continuous band throughout the central ¾ of the tread width
(measured in the main grooves), and over the whole
circumference of the tyre.
If you ignore the law and are caught, you can be fined up
to £2500 and receive three penalty points for each
defective tyre. It simply isn't worth taking chances with
your life or your savings.
Your safety
The more tread your tyres have, the better they will grip,
especially in the wet. it is universally recognised in the
tyre industry that the legal limit is wholly insufficient
to protect drivers in adverse driving conditions.
In the UK, the minimum depth required by law is 1.6mm
across 75% of the tread depth. This is not universal across
Europe, however. If you plan to drive your car abroad,
check the legal requirements of that country before you
start your journey.
For your safety, we strongly recommend that you consider
replacing your tyres when the tread depth reaches
3mm but under no circumstances allow the
tread depth to fall below 2mm.
For a quick visual check, look for the Tread Wear
Indicators (or bars) which are built into the tread pattern
- when the main tread is at the same level as these, then
you've reached the legal minimum.
If you're not sure how to measure your tread depth, call in
and we will be pleased to do it for you.
Uneven tyre wear and its
causes
If your tyre is not evenly worn right across its width, it
could be due to incorrect inflation, as mentioned above. On
the front wheels, however, it may be because of poor wheel
alignment or other mechanical problems.
Our qualified MoT inspectors will check out your car's
wheel alignment and suspension; if there's a problem, we
will recommend the best course of action.
Wheel balancing
An unbalanced front wheel will shake your steering wheel
and could cause serious mechanical damage, not to mention
being extremely annoying. An unbalanced rear wheel will
shake the whole car and can be quite literally an
unsettling experience. We will always balance your wheels
as a matter of course when we replace your tyres. We also
replace the tyre valves and protective dust caps.
PS: Don't forget the spare!
